Your Competitors Are Getting Found. 34 Years Ago I Figured Out Why.

If your phone isn't ringing and your inbox is quiet, your marketing isn't working — and every day you wait, someone else is landing the contract that should have been yours. I solved this problem before most of today's marketing agencies existed. I'm still solving it now.

Industrial companies. Commercial contractors. Manufacturing firms. If you run a serious B2B operation and you're still depending on referrals, a website nobody visits, or an agency that sends you reports nobody understands — you already know something isn't working.

THE PROBLEM MOST B2B OWNERS WON'T ADMIT THEY HAVE

You're Not Losing Because
Your Business Isn't Good Enough.
You're Losing Because Nobody Can Find You.

Let's be direct about something most marketing agencies won't say to your face.

Your business has real capability. You have the equipment, the crew, the certifications, and the track record. You've delivered for clients that would make your competitors envious. But when a procurement manager, a plant director, or a VP of Operations sits down and types what you do into a search bar — or worse, asks an AI assistant for a recommendation — your name doesn't come up. Someone else's does.

That's not a sales problem. That's not a product problem. That is a marketing infrastructure problem. And it's costing you contracts you'll never even know you lost.

  • Your website exists. It just doesn't work.

Most B2B websites are digital brochures collecting dust. They look fine, they say the right things, and they generate absolutely nothing.

  • You're invisible in AI search.

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview answers a buyer's question, your company isn't in the answer. Your competitor is. That's the new front line and most businesses don't even know the war started.

  • Your lead pipeline is a referral network on life support.

Referrals are a gift, not a strategy. When they slow down — and they always slow down — there's nothing underneath to catch you.

  • You hired a marketing agency. Nothing moved.

They built you a campaign, sent you a monthly report full of metrics that don't connect to revenue, and renewed your contract anyway. You paid. You waited. You moved on.

  • You don't have a marketing system. You have marketing expenses.

There's a significant difference between spending money on marketing and owning a marketing infrastructure that generates pipeline on your behalf. Most B2B companies have never experienced the latter.

These aren't new problems. I've been solving every one of them for B2B companies across Northeast Ohio and nationwide since 1992. The difference is I don't patch the symptoms. I rebuild the system.

THE MAKING OF A MARKETING STRATEGIST

This Isn't a Story About Marketing.
It's a Story About Business.

Most marketing strategists learned marketing in a classroom and practiced it on someone else's business. I learned it by running one. Then another. Then several more — across industries that don't forgive mistakes and don't reward theory. That distinction matters more than most clients realize until they've worked with me.

1979–1991

The Early Education

At 13, I became the youngest car wax distributor in the United States for The Wax Shop — a California-based company later acquired by Turtle Wax. It wasn't a hobby. It was a market, a margin, and a lesson in what it means to move product.

By 14, I was working inside my father's national environmental companies — Erieway Inc. and Chem-Freight Inc. My high school enrolled me in a cooperative business education program. I didn't just participate — I led. President of the CBE chapter. President of fundraising. The classroom and the job site were never two separate things for me.

1990–1992

The Academic Edge

I attended the same college John D. Rockefeller once walked. Dean's List three times. Marketing and Advertising major. Grade average of A.

My sales management thesis earned the only A that Professor Edwin Kelly — a practicing attorney and demanding academic — had ever awarded. He didn't just grade it. He asked permission to use it as a teaching resource for future students. If the work is strong enough to teach others, that's not a compliment. That's a standard.

1991–1992

The First Real Test

Before I graduated, I was handed a failing company and told to fix it with $5,000. Ceres Environmental — a hazardous waste remediation firm — was $50,000 in the red. Nine months later: $1 million in gross revenue, Fortune 500 contracts, and federal government agency relationships. I was in my early twenties.

That experience didn't teach me marketing theory. It taught me that marketing without business acumen is decoration. Real marketing moves money.

1992

The Exit & The Pivot

My father sold his four national environmental companies in 1992 — a transaction reported in local press that reflected the kind of exit most business owners spend a lifetime engineering. I played a direct role in making it happen.

I developed two distinct marketing and business plans — not one. The first for a buyer already operating inside the environmental industry. The second for a buyer coming from outside it entirely. Two audiences. Two documents. One outcome. The company sold to an industry insider — precisely the buyer the first plan was built to convert.

That experience at 22 years old cemented something I've applied to every client engagement since: effective marketing is never one message broadcast to everyone. It's the right message, engineered for the right reader, delivered at the right moment.

1992

The Founding

I established Apollo Desktop Publishing in Cleveland, Ohio — creating digital documents, brand identity, and brochures for local businesses. The first chapter of what would become DDM Design was built on creative discipline and technical fluency — a combination that would prove to be the foundation of everything that followed.

1995

The Internet Changes Everything

In 1995, the internet became a commercial reality. I was already there. While most businesses were still debating whether a website was necessary, I was building them — and listing them. At the time, I was among the only website design firms in the entire state of Ohio indexed in Yahoo Directory.

Search engine optimization didn't have a name when I started doing it. I was optimizing websites for discoverability before the methodology had a manual, before Google existed. Early projects included a significant engagement with Trayer Engineering in California — evidence that even in those early years, the work was reaching well beyond Northeast Ohio.

1995–NOW

The Model

Owner-operated by design — not by limitation. Every client engagement is handled directly by me. I've adapted every time the industry shifted. Not after the shift. During it. That's the difference between someone who follows digital marketing and someone who has been part of building it.

Thirty-four years. One operator. Zero shortcuts.

THE SYSTEM THAT CHANGES THE EQUATION

This Is Not a Campaign.
This Is Infrastructure.

Most agencies sell you activity. I build you an asset. There's a reason B2B companies come to me after they've already tried two or three other agencies. It's not that those agencies were incompetent. It's that they were selling the wrong thing. Campaigns end. Contracts expire. Ad budgets get cut. What I build doesn't disappear when the invoice stops.

DDM Marketing System — Precision B2B marketing infrastructure — SEO AEO lead generation

Search Dominance Engine

Traditional SEO + AI Search Optimization (AEO)

Search has split into two lanes. Traditional — Google rankings, organic traffic, technical SEO. And AI search — when a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity who the best vendor is, that answer comes from somewhere. I engineer both simultaneously so your business is the answer in every lane a modern buyer uses.

Authority Architecture

Brand Positioning + Digital Credibility Infrastructure

Rankings get you found. Authority gets you chosen. I build the digital credibility infrastructure that makes your business the obvious answer once a buyer arrives — structured content, consistent brand signals, and an online presence that tells a procurement manager this company is the real deal before the first call.

Lead Generation System

Inbound Pipeline Engineering — No Bought Leads. Ever.

I don't sell leads. I don't broker them. I don't run a lead pool shared across competing businesses in your category. I build an inbound pipeline that attracts, qualifies, and delivers leads generated specifically for your business. When the phone rings, it came from a system you own — not a vendor you're dependent on.

Website Performance System

Conversion-Engineered Web Presence

A B2B website that doesn't convert qualified visitors into inquiries isn't a marketing asset — it's an expense. I rebuild or recalibrate web presences specifically for B2B conversion: clear authority signals, friction-free pathways to contact, and technical performance that satisfies both human visitors and search engine crawlers.

The One Operator Advantage

Direct Engagement. Senior Expertise. Zero Delegation.

When you engage with me, you work directly with me. Not an account manager relaying messages. Not a production team working from a brief they didn't write. Every strategy is mine. Every recommendation carries thirty-four years of pattern recognition. Every deliverable reflects a standard held since 1992 because my name is the only one on the door.

The DDM Marketing System delivers:

  • ✦ Dominance in traditional search and AI search simultaneously
  • ✦ A digital authority profile that converts visitors into inquiries
  • ✦ An inbound lead pipeline your business owns outright
  • ✦ A conversion-engineered web presence built for B2B buyers
  • ✦ AI-powered diagnostics before a single dollar is committed
  • ✦ Direct senior-level engagement on every aspect of your marketing

THE ROSTER. THE INDUSTRIES. THE PROOF.

When You've Worked at This Level,
Every New Client Gets the Benefit
of Every Client That Came Before.

The range of organizations I've worked with over three decades isn't a vanity stat. It's a strategic asset. Every engagement has made me a sharper strategist for the next one. Here's the range that represents.

Automotive

Ford · Chrysler

Two of the most recognizable names in American automotive manufacturing. Marketing that speaks directly to engineers, operations managers, and procurement professionals simultaneously.

Precision Manufacturing & Metal Fabrication

Tendon Manufacturing

Ohio's premier precision metal fabrication operation — 150,000 square feet, ISO 9001:2015 certified, serving aerospace, defense, medical, energy, and government sectors across 48 states. Over a decade of continuous digital marketing partnership.

Federal Government & Defense

NASA · Department of Energy — EG&G · US Army Recruiting

Government agency marketing at the highest institutional level. The discipline of building credibility with the most demanding audiences in existence — applied directly to regulated B2B environments.

Environmental & Hazardous Materials

Waste Management · HazMat Magazine

I don't just market to this industry — I ran a company inside it. My business and marketing plans played a direct role in the acquisition of my father's national environmental companies by a Waste Management principal stakeholder.

Financial Services

Fifth Third Bank

Precision, compliance sensitivity, and institutional trust signals. When the product is money and the buyer is a business, every word carries weight.

Construction & Real Estate Development

Forest City Construction · IB Roof Systems

Long procurement cycles. Multiple decision makers. Companies that win the contracts are the ones with the strongest digital authority before the first conversation happens.

Consumer Brands & Media

MTV · FILA

National scale. Brand positioning at speed. The mechanics of building recognition in crowded markets — applied directly to B2B differentiation.

Industrial & Power Systems

Trayer Engineering · HazMat Magazine

Industrial power switchgear serving government agencies and Fortune 500 corporations. When your buyer is a government procurement officer and your product is mission-critical infrastructure, the marketing has to carry the full weight of technical authority.

What this means for your business:

Whether you manufacture components, manage environmental compliance, operate in construction, or provide industrial services — I have almost certainly worked in your world or across the table from the exact type of buyer you are trying to reach. That context isn't incidental. It's the difference between a strategist who has to learn your industry before they can market it and one who arrives already knowing what moves your buyer.

INDUSTRY BREADTH IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. IT IS THE CREDENTIAL.

THE CASE FOR WORKING WITH JOHN DEGAETANO

You Don't Need Another Agency.
You Need the Right Operator.

By the time most B2B executives reach out to me, they've already been through the agency experience. Somewhere between month three and month eight they've had the quiet, uncomfortable realization that the needle hasn't moved in any direction that connects to revenue. That's not an indictment of every agency. It's an honest description of a structural problem in how most marketing services are delivered.

You Work With Me. Directly. Always.

No account manager between us. No junior strategist interpreting your goals. When we talk strategy, that's me. When the work gets done, that's me. Thirty-four years of context in every conversation. Every time.

I Have Actually Run Businesses.

Payroll. Government contracts. Failing company turnarounds. Acquisition-level business plans. That business intelligence is not incidental to my marketing — it is the foundation of it.

I Don't Sell Marketing. I Build Infrastructure.

Marketing you buy is an expense line that disappears the moment you stop paying. Infrastructure I build is a permanent asset inside your business. You own what gets built. That's not how most agencies operate. It's exactly how I do.

I've Been Doing This Since Before the Industry Existed.

Building websites and doing search optimization before Google launched. Before the term digital marketing existed. That accumulation of pattern recognition cannot be replicated by someone who started five years ago regardless of their certifications.

I Am Already in Your Industry.

Precision manufacturing. Industrial services. Commercial construction. Environmental compliance. Financial services. Federal government. Aerospace. Defense. Energy. Not researched for a pitch — lived inside of, for clients who trusted me with their digital authority for years.

My Business Model Protects Your Results.

I take on a selective number of clients by design. Every client gets my full attention, full expertise, and full accountability. Quality is never the variable that gets compromised when things get busy.

The Results Stay With You.

When an engagement concludes, everything built remains yours. Search authority. Content architecture. Lead pipeline infrastructure. Web presence. You don't lose your marketing investment when you're not paying a monthly retainer.

I've been at this for thirty-four years. I've worked with NASA and the Department of Energy. I've helped close a multi-million dollar corporate acquisition with a marketing document. I'm not telling you that to impress you. I'm telling you that because when you hire me, all of that comes with me — into your business, applied to your specific challenge, with your name and your revenue on the line alongside mine.

That's what working with the right operator looks like. And that's the only standard I've ever operated under.

ONE OPERATOR. ONE STANDARD. THIRTY-FOUR YEARS OF PROOF.

LET'S HAVE THE CONVERSATION

You've Read Enough.
You Already Know If This Is
the Right Call.

Here's what happens when you reach out. There's no sales team on the other end. No intake coordinator who schedules you three weeks out for a discovery call that goes nowhere. You reach me directly. We have a real conversation about your business — your market, your current situation, where the gaps are, and what a marketing system engineered specifically for your operation would look like.

That conversation costs you nothing. What it gives you is clarity — on exactly where your business stands in search and AI visibility right now, and what it would take to change that. If it makes sense to work together, we talk about what that looks like. Either way you come out ahead. That's not a sales pitch. That's just how I operate.

No Long-Term Contracts Required

Engage on your terms. The system I build performs because it's engineered well — not because you're locked in.

No Obligation on the Free Audit

Run your AI audit and LinkedIn scan before you ever speak to me. The results are yours to keep regardless of what you decide.
